I have been a strength and conditioning specialist on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia (Buford, Suwanee, Johns Creek, Duluth) for over 10 years now. The one thing that I guarantee will separate your baseball game from the guy that is warming the bench is a well trained body! Now when I say well trained I don’t mean just in the practiced skills of baseball alone. In addition to this I mean that the truly dominant baseball players are spending ample time in the weight room or even at home building their core strength.
Building a strong core center is important, but the type of strength I am referring to is down right freakish! You see contrary to common belief you don’t go about building this type of strength for your baseball game by doing crunches on a useless ab machine. The only way to build the core power I am talking about requires you to properly execute multi-joint lifts and movements that build on and improve your body’s total mobility which is the key to elevating your on field performance. You see building core strength is a functional thing just like the game of baseball.
If you break down the movements involved in the game of baseball you understand that you must be able to generate power from your body’s center to perform the acts of throwing, fielding, and hitting. These dynamic qualities can only be improved on by working your body in such a way that you strengthen it through the act of dynamic movement. Some great exercises for you to do this involve lifts such as kettlebell swings, kettlebell snatches, barbell dead lifts, and power cleans. All of these movements help you to not only develop the power and explosiveness you need to perform at a high level, but they will also help to keep you injury free.
When looking at some of the multi-joint core lifts that I just mentioned you will improve on your body’s functional mobility, you will protect your back, strengthen your shoulders, improve your balance, and more than likely keep yourself injury free throughout the duration of a very long physical season. The key to doing this is to make sure you are executing these strength and conditioning drills with flawless technique and this requires instruction. This is where I come in.
